Last summer, you probably took a few long weekend trips, maybe even a longer vacation. Then parked your travel trailer or fifth wheel for the winter.
Now the weather’s warming up, your plans are coming together, and you’re getting ready to hit the road again.
You check the tires. Test the lights. Hook everything up.
It feels like you’re ready to go.
But there’s one thing most RV owners don’t think about until it becomes a problem:
Your wheel bearings.
Why Wheel Bearings Matter More Than You Think
Wheel bearings are what allow your trailer wheels to spin smoothly while carrying the full weight of your RV.
When they’re properly cleaned, inspected, and packed with fresh grease, they do their job quietly in the background.
But after sitting for months, that grease can break down. Moisture can sneak in. And once you start towing again, heat and friction build quickly.
That’s when issues start to show up.
What Can Happen If They’re Ignored
This isn’t one of those “I’ll do it later” maintenance items.
Worn or dry bearings can:
- Overheat during travel
- Wear down faster than expected
- Damage surrounding components like seals and brakes
- Lead to serious failure on the road
If a bearing fails, it can create serious problems while you’re towing, including damage to the hub or wheel.
How Often Should Wheel Bearings Be Repacked?
For most travel trailers and fifth wheels, a good rule of thumb is:
- At least once a year, or
- Every 10,000–12,000 miles, whichever comes first
You may need it more often if:
- You travel frequently or long distances
- Your RV has been sitting for extended periods
- You’ve towed through rain, humidity, or rough conditions
If you’re not sure when it was last done, that’s usually your answer.
Can You Do It Yourself?
You can.
But it’s not as simple as just adding grease.
A proper wheel bearing service includes:
- Removing the hub assembly
- Cleaning out all old grease
- Inspecting bearings for wear or damage
- Replacing seals
- Repacking with fresh grease
- Reinstalling everything with the correct torque
Miss something, or rush through it, and you may not know there’s a problem until you’re already on the road.
For a lot of RV owners, it comes down to this:
You can do it yourself… but do you really want to deal with it?
